Five Common Issues with Roofing Systems

Even with all of the progress society has made, nothing is forever. When it comes to the roof over our heads, it can seem like their life stretches on and on until one day, something happens and we wish we had done something about it. There’s just so many problems that can come from the top down, but how can you prevent them? Today, Roc-Stout is going to go over some of the most common roof system issues. Hopefully, this will help you be more aware of your roof and the tiny parts that make it up.


Now, these might be a no brainer when it comes to roofing systems, but it’s definitely a great place to start thinking about your roof. But how do you know when to repair shingles? Fortunately, there’s a few prominent signs to look out for, such as…

  • Length of life (experts cite a recommended life-span of around 20 years)
  • Curling (when shingles begin to peel upwards) and Buckling (when the shingles begin to slide down)
  • Missing granules or fully displaced shingles
  • Discoloration

If you begin to see any of these signs, it’s definitely time to call a professional to come take a look. 

Roof Flashing

This part of your roof might not be something that you’re all too familiar with. So what is roof flashing? You know those small cracks between the roof and the wall, or around your chimney or skylight? Those are extremely susceptible to water damage and leaks. The roof flashing is a thin layer of galvanized (rust-free) steel that is placed over those tiny little spaces to protect them.

A couple of things that to look out for are corrosion and detached flashing. Fortunately, if it’s properly installed, the flashing should last anywhere from 20 to 60 years. On top of that, it’s relatively inexpensive so replacing flashing at the same time as shingles is always a pretty solid idea.

The Fascia

Commonly known as “trim”, the fascia runs the length of the roof below the shingles and commonly has the gutter system attached to it. Usually crafted using metal or wood, the fascia is designed with two things in mind: visual appeal and moisture control.

That being said, it’s important to note that this part of your roof becomes vulnerable in certain climates. Ice dams and overflowing gutters are huge problems with the fascia, so it’s important to keep your eyes on it in the harsh seasons. 

The Soffit

The soffit is the section of the roof located below the fascia. Traditionally, the soffit was made using woods and metals but the modern age has deemed synthetic materials more useful. So what is the purpose of the soffit? In a way, it works for the fascia by ventilating and removing moisture and heat.

It’s important that the soffit gets fixed quickly, but fortunately the biggest issue is cracks and deteriorating material. This means that it can also house small pests, so be sure to check up on this section every once in a while.

The Gutters

Finally, a familiar part of the house. I’m sure it goes without saying that the primary function of a gutter is to safely divert excess water. What might need to be said, however, is that it’s extremely important to regularly maintain to avoid overflow, blockages, or detachment.

Though some brush it off as a mundane and avoidable chore, keeping your gutter lines healthy becomes excessively important during the fall, winter, and rainy seasons. Has your gutter become detached? It might be time to call a professional, if so.
